Layam Alayam - SD277 - DVD

The Mridangam is the most indispensable percussive instrument, omnipresent in all South Indian Art forms. This twin DVD package has the mridangam maestro Guruvayoor Dorai demonstrating various rhythmical patterns for two talas namely Adi and Misra Chapu to his students in an interactive session, followed by an exquisite Tala Vadhya Ensemble with his senior students in Adi and Misra Jampai in the first volume. The second volume has an engaging demonstration of the art of playing Mridangam for various items in a concert including a question answer session. A must buy for every student of mridangam.

Guruvayoor Dorai is one of India’s most celebrated exponents of the mridangam. Disciple of the legendary Pazhani Subramania Pillai and torchbearer of the Pudukkottai school, Sri Dorai has completed 60 years of concert performance. His vast experience of accompanying many giants of Carnatic music explains his uncannily superb and perfect anticipation of the musical nuances. The highlights of his style are his masterful and effortless playing on the Thoppi and the gumkis. His style is the perfect blend between old and new traditions. Sri Dorai has become a trailblazer for all young mridangam artists. He is also an illustrious teacher and has many talented and reputed students all over the world. He has received a host of awards and titles like Kalaimamani, Sangeeth Natak Academy award, Laya Chakravarthy to name a few. He is the recipient of the Sangeetha Ratnakara award at the Cleveland Thyagaraja festival for the year 2008. A truly Magnificent artist.
