Bodhakam
Laya in Trinity’s Compositions
A Lec - Dem by Lalgudi G.Jayaraman

Vocal Support - S.P. Ramh | Mridangam - K.R.Ganesh

Lalgudi Jayaraman, the violin maestro, who was aptly described as LayaRaman by Shri Ramnad Krishnan, shares in this presentation, his mastery of the laya (rhythmic) aspect of the compositions of the Trinity of Carnatic Music, namely Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri. The two fold appeal of Carnatic music to the head and the heart through the mathematics and the melodic components is demonstrated in this live recording.

In a simple, conversational exposition he points out the various aspects of Laya, such as talas, gait, starting point, pause, arudi, yati etc. singing the relevant passages to highlight the beauty arising out of the laya devices. Neither pedantic nor clinical in his analysis Sri Jayaraman approaches the great compositions as a rasika, relishing the felicity with which the laya embellishes the raga bhava (emotion through melody) and artha bhava (emotion through lyrics) of the lines. He stresses that Laya is never obtrusive or assertive, but is the strong undercurrent felt all along.

His extensive and in depth knowledge of the compositions makes this comparative study a rich and rewarding experience .It is an additional treat to behold and listen to the master of the bow, sing the lines( assisted by his disciple SP Ramh), as he takes the viewer step by step to savour the beauties pointed out by him.
