A Viruttam(Tamil) is a devotional verse sung in Carnatic music concerts. They are referred to as Slokams in Sanskrit. Viruttams are not sung to talas and are mainly improvised using one or more ragas. It is one of the different forms of Manodharma Sangeetham (extemporization) in Carnatic music. Mostly Viruttams are sung at the end of a concert as a ragamalika or in a single raga. Occasionally, multiple Viruttams are sung in different ragams, followed by a song in the same ragam as the last sung ragam of the Viruttam.
